It's the harsh law of tech: today's flagship is already tomorrow's ancestor. A new massive leak, orchestrated by the essential Digital Chat Station, has just unveiled the Xiaomi 18. On the menu: a redesigned ergonomic design and a technical upgrade that risks hurting the competition, with Samsung at the forefront.
An increased size for a “elegant” design
This is the turning point of this new generation. Where Xiaomi opted for compactness with its standard model (the Xiaomi 17 and its 6.3 inches), the manufacturer seems to want to change its philosophy.
According to leaked industrial schematics, the Xiaomi 18 would abandon the strict 6.3-inch format to venture into slightly larger territory, hovering between 6.3 and 6.4 inches. This is not insignificant: this space gain would allow engineers to integrate a larger battery and a more efficient cooling system, two common Achilles' heels on overpowered compact smartphones.
The aesthetics are not left behind. The leak mentions a particularly "streamlined" design. While precise renderings remain to be confirmed, everything suggests that Xiaomi is looking to better integrate its photo island, often criticized for its massive protrusion on Ultra models. The objective is clear: to offer an object that is smoother in hand, without sacrificing the brand's visual identity.
Under the hood: The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 dilemma
This is where Xiaomi's strategy becomes interesting, even divisive. The heart of the matter would be the future Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 from Qualcomm. However, a significant nuance appears in the technical reports.
To maintain an aggressive entry price on the standard model, Xiaomi might skip the “Pro” version of this chip, reserving ultimate raw power for the Ultra model. A pragmatic choice that raises a question: will the performance difference be noticeable to the average user? Probably not, but on paper, it marks a clearer segmentation of the range.
Photography: The leap to 200 Megapixels
If you found the zoom on the current standard model a bit lacking, the Xiaomi 18 might just reconcile you with the brand. The abandonment of the 50 MP telephoto sensor (2.6x optical zoom) seems set in favor of a much more powerful solution.
Rumors are insistently talking about a 200-megapixel main sensor for the base model. This technical choice would allow not only exceptional sharpness but also a much better quality “zero-in on the sensor” (crop) zoom, thus compensating for the potential absence of a periscope reserved for Pro models. This is a direct attack on the future Galaxy S26, which is expected to perform well in this segment.
Our opinion: A year of transition or revolution?
The Xiaomi 18 doesn't seem to be a simple incremental update. By touching the form factor (screen size) and revising its camera setup, Xiaomi is taking risks.
The release is expected in China for September 2026, which still gives engineers a few months to refine their work. For us Europeans, we will likely have to wait until early 2027 to get our hands on it. Until then, the Xiaomi 17 will have the heavy task of keeping us waiting.
