Google has just taken a long-awaited step: thecall recording integrated into the Phone app is finally open to all Pixel users worldwide, after years of frustrating geographical restrictions. The condition is simple, but it's worth understanding it well before activating the feature.
Four years late for a trivial feature
On many low-end Android smartphones or from third-party manufacturers, call recording has existed for years without restriction. Pixels, however presented as the ultimate Android reference, were deprived of it outside the United States. This paradox was explained by an entanglement of national legislations that were difficult to harmonize and by Google's historical caution regarding legal risks in certain markets.
In September 2025, Google announced the global expansion of Call Recording via the Phone app. An initial large deployment in the United States took place in November 2025, as part of the Pixel Feature Drop. Europe began receiving the update from late January and early February 2026, with availability announced for all markets before the end of February.
Android 14 and Pixel 6: the technical prerequisites
The feature is accessible on Pixel 6 and newer models, provided you are running Android 14 or a later version. You also need to have version 198 or higher of Google's Phone app, available on the Play Store. If the update doesn't appear automatically, a manual check for app updates may be enough to trigger the rollout.
An important distinction must be made here: this recording feature is different from Call Notes powered by Gemini Nano, reserved for Pixel 9 (excluding the A series) and newer models. Classic call recording, on the other hand, does not offer automatic transcription or summarization. It simply captures the audio of the conversation and stores it locally on the device.
How to activate recording step by step
Activation is done entirely from the Phone app, without installing external APKs or advanced manipulation. Once in the app, open the side menu or the hamburger menu at the top right, then navigate to "Settings" and "Call Recording" to start an initial configuration and download procedure.
During a call, a dedicated button in the menu ofcall assistance allows you to start recording. A countdown precedes an automatic voice message that warns all participants that the conversation is being recorded. It is possible to interrupt the recording at any time by pressing "Stop". At the end of the call, the recording appears in the Home tab with a microphone icon and an integrated audio player.
Advanced settings allow for automatic recording configuration for calls from unknown numbers or specific contacts. File management is flexible: automatic deletion after 7, 14, or 30 days, or indefinite retention according to user preferences.
Recording a call in France: what the law says
This is where Google's condition makes sense. The feature is available "in all countries and regions where call recording is supported", but some markets may have it disabled depending on local legislation. In France, Article 226 of the Penal Code strictly prohibits recording a telephone conversation without the knowledge of the other party. Google has integrated this constraint directly into the interface: the automatic warning message broadcast at the beginning of the recording is precisely designed to ensure the consent of all parties.
This notification mechanism cannot be disabled, which means it is technically impossible to record a call secretly with this native feature. For legitimate professional uses (journalistic interviews, telephone meetings, note-taking), the function therefore fully meets the requirements of French law.
100% local processing, without sending to Google
The technical architecture chosen by Google deserves to be highlighted. Audio files are stored only on the device, with no copies transmitted to Google's servers. Any additional processing, such as transcription on compatible Gemini Nano models, also runs locally. For users concerned about their privacy, this is a concrete guarantee that their conversations do not end up in the databases of the Mountain View company.
The Pixel 10a as a trigger for global deployment
This global rollout is not insignificant in its timing. Google has explicitly linked the universal availability of call recording to the launch of the Pixel 10a, currently available for pre-order and in France on March 5, 2026Offering this feature across the entire Pixel range before the arrival of the new mid-range device strengthens the ecosystem's coherence and provides an additional argument for hesitant buyers. The Pixel 10a therefore does not arrive alone: it is part of a global software update that benefits all owners of Pixel 6 and later models worldwide.
