Nano Banana 2, Google's new image generation model, is now available to all users without a paid subscription. Under its technical name Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, it marks a decisive step in the race for visual generative AI.
A clear ambition: speed without sacrificing quality
Officially launched on February 26, 2026, Nano Banana 2 is the third iteration of a lineage born in August 2025. The first Nano Banana model triggered a viral phenomenon, particularly in India, generating millions of images in a few weeks. In November 2025, Google responded to demand with Nano Banana Pro, a studio-quality oriented model reserved for paying subscribers.
With Nano Banana 2, Google is changing its strategy. It's no longer about stacking models in a pricing hierarchy, but about merging the power of Pro and the speed of Flash into a single version accessible to everyone. "Introducing Nano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image), our latest state-of-the-art image model. Now you can get the advanced world knowledge, quality and reasoning you love in Nano Banana Pro, at lightning-fast speed," said Google, according to the official Google DeepMind blog.
What Nano Banana 2 changes concretely
The list of new features is not cosmetic. Technically, the model integrates real-time data from Google Search to anchor its visuals in the real world, which directly distinguishes it from competitors like DALL-E or Midjourney. Naina Raisinghani, product manager at Google DeepMind, confirmed that this connection allows for the generation of infographics or diagrams with up-to-date data, according to information published by The Verge.
The character consistency has also progressed significantly: the model can maintain the likeness of up to five characters and the fidelity of 14 objects in a single workflow, paving the way for structured visual storytelling. The resolutions produced range from 512px to 4K, with full control over aspect ratios, making exports directly usable for professional productions.
Among the capabilities inherited from Nano Banana Pro are precise text rendering in images (posters, marketing mockups, greeting cards), as well as the translation and localization of text integrated into a visual, functions that until now required a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription.
Massive deployment across the entire Google ecosystem
Google is not just updating an application. Nano Banana 2 is becoming the default image generation model in virtually all its services. In the Gemini app, it replaces Nano Banana Pro in Fast, Thinking, and Pro modes. In Google Search, it is now activated in AI Mode and Google Lens in 141 countries, on mobile and desktop.
The Flow video editing tool also integrates Nano Banana 2 as the default model, accessible for free without consuming credits. Developers have preview access via the Gemini API, Gemini CLI, Vertex API, and Google AI Studio. Subscribers to the Google AI Pro and Ultra plans retain access to Nano Banana Pro for specialized tasks, via the three-dot menu on images.
The issue of transparency at the heart of the launch
Google anticipated criticism about visual misinformation by integrating two layers of traceability from the outset. Each image generated by Nano Banana 2 embeds a SynthID watermark, Google's in-house technology for identifying AI-generated content. These images are also interoperable with C2PA Content Credentials, an industry standard supported by a consortium including Adobe, Microsoft, Google, OpenAI, and Meta.
The numbers show that demand already exists: since its launch in November 2025, the SynthID verification feature in the Gemini app has been used over 20 million times. Google has announced the upcoming integration of C2PA verification directly into the Gemini app, to offer users complete context on how AI has been used in an image.
A free model that challenges OpenAI
In the image generation market, the decision to make these capabilities accessible without a subscription is a strong signal. At the end of February 2026, Nano Banana Pro held the second position in the global image generator rankings by Elo score, just behind OpenAI's GPT Image 1.5 High. By democratizing Pro features, Google reduces the competitive advantage of its main competitor's paid offerings while expanding its active user base.
The strategy is clear: capture the largest number of users at the free level, collect massive feedback, and continue to refine the models. With Nano Banana 2, Google confirms that speed and quality are no longer opposing compromises in AI image generation.
