TheiPhone 20 anniversary could feature a 6,000 mAh battery, an unprecedented leap in the history of Apple's smartphone. According to several leaks published in early May 2026, the 2027 version of the iPhone will radically redefine its autonomy ambitions.
The announcement comes amid intense speculation surrounding the model planned for Fall 2027, the date when Apple will celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the lineup launched by Steve Jobs in January 2007. On the Chinese social network Weibo, leaker Instant Digital published a detailed message on May 5, 2026, listing several expected features of this anniversary iPhone. While this information remains unconfirmed by Apple, it deserves attention: Instant Digital has a credible track record, having notably anticipated the release of the iPhone 14 in yellow and the frosted glass back of the iPhone 15.
A jump of nearly 1,000 mAh compared to the current Pro Max
To measure the scale of the announced leap, we need to look at current figures. TheiPhone 17 Pro Max, which currently represents the pinnacle of Apple's lineup in terms of capacity, features a 5,088 mAh battery in its version without a physical SIM tray, and 4,823 mAh in its version with SIM connectivity. A 6,000 mAh battery would therefore represent an approximately 18% increase compared to the current high-end model, which is considerable for a brand that has long prioritized software mastery over the race for milliamp-hours.
This increase in capacity would not solely be intended to extend daily battery life. It would also accompany a feature that various Apple rumors have been reviving since 2019 without ever seeing it come to fruition: reverse wireless charging. According to information shared by Instant Digital on Weibo, the iPhone 20 would allow charging accessories, such as AirPods or Apple Watch, simply by placing them on the back of the device. If the promise materializes in 2027, Apple would be closing an obvious gap with several Android manufacturers who have already offered this feature for several years.
Haptic buttons: third attempt after two abandonments
Perhaps the most significant feature of the iPhone 20 does not concern the battery, but the physical interface. According to Instant Digital's message, the anniversary model will definitively abandon mechanical buttons in favor of solid-state haptic buttons, a technology that simulates the sensation of a click through haptic feedback, without any moving parts. The principle is already familiar to MacBook users through the trackpad, or iPhone 7 users through the Home button.
This is not the first time Apple has attempted this. The internal project codenamed 'Bongo' was considered for the iPhone 15 Pro in 2023, before being stopped late in the development cycle. The experience was repeated for the iPhone 16 Pro, with the same outcome. The difference in 2027, according to Instant Digital, would be that the buttons have now passed several serious validation stages. 'Precise pressure recognition tests were conducted under conditions of wearing gloves, wet hands, extreme temperatures, and through a case,' the leaker specified in their Weibo post.
A technical detail distinguishes this integration from previous attempts: the buttons would operate via a very low-power chip, allowing them to be used even when the iPhone is turned off or the battery is completely dead. The affected buttons would include the side button, volume buttons, Action button, and Camera Control button. This architecture would fit into the overall design vision of the iPhone 20, described internally as a device whose front and sides form a continuous glass surface, without visible cutouts or mechanical relief.
Under the screen, a completely redesigned architecture
The design strategy of theiPhone 20 would go far beyond buttons. According to Instant Digital, the device would integrate an under-display Face ID via a sub-display infrared system, as well as a front camera also hidden behind the display surface.
