Google Health 5.01 is available on Android and iOS since June 5, 2026. This first post-redesign update fixes the main nutrition, fitness, and sleep tracking bugs that appeared since the forced migration from Fitbit.
A Controversial Migration That Required a Quick Fix
On May 19, 2026, Google replaced the Fitbit app with Google Health via an automatic mandatory update, with no way to escape it. The transition quickly caused strong frustration among long-time users, faced with a completely redesigned interface and missing features, such as Sleep Profile or motivation badges. On specialized forums, the comparison with the failed redesign of the Sonos app was repeatedly brought up. The technical malfunctions reported in the days following the launch further fueled this discontent.
Google had reacted by publishing a roadmap detailing the upcoming fixes and improvements. Version 5.01, whose deployment began today according to Google's official post on its community support, represents the first concrete delivery of this promise. The update is rolling out gradually over a week, with availability varying by device and carrier.
What Google Health 5.01 Fixes for Nutritional Tracking
Diet management was among the most criticized points since the launch. Google is addressing this by now allowing users to view and save custom foods they had previously created. The creation of new custom foods directly from the app is not yet available, but Google confirms it will arrive in a future update. The addition of explanations and recommendations for setting macronutrient goals should facilitate the configuration of nutrition tracking for users who want to go beyond simple calorie counting.
Data import from third-party apps also benefits from several fixes. A bug classified some meals imported via Apple Health from MyFitnessPal, Cronometer, or Lose It under the generic category "Other" instead of their actual category, such as breakfast or lunch. This problem is resolved. The app now more intelligently handles duplicates generated when the same third-party service is connected both via Health Connect and directly to Google Health. Food entries imported from Apple Health without a name now receive an automatic default name, improving the readability of the history.
The consistency of the graphs is also improved. Nutrition and calorie data are now harmonized between the Today tab, the Health tab, and the detailed view dedicated to food. On iOS, Google has simplified changing the unit of measurement when saving a food item from search results.
Fitness: Workout Recordings Finally Reliable
On the sports tracking side, several bugs were affecting the reliability of recorded data. The most visible one caused the wrong type of activity to be assigned to some runningsessions, which appeared in the history under the label of another sport. Google specifies that this problem is fixed for new sessions as well as for existing history. Split data, which was missing from some running summaries, has also been restored.
GPS map loading, which could be slow or fail after an outdoor session, has been improved. On iOS, a specific bug caused double counting of steps for users who had both Apple Health tracking and Google Health mobile tracking enabled. This malfunction is fixed in version 5.01.
Sleep and General Fixes
Sleep tracking was not spared either. Some users were no longer seeing their sleep score appear in the dedicated tab of the app. Google confirms that this problem is resolved, without specifying what proportion of users were affected.
Several more general malfunctions are also addressed. The Today tab on Android sometimes displayed outdated information instead of updated data. On iOS, two blocking issues have been resolved: the migration of a Fitbit account to a Google account, which failed for some users, can now be completed by restarting the process from the beginning. The Friends & Family screen, which was sometimes very slow to load or completely inaccessible, is now working normally again. Accessibility improvements for VoiceOver users on iOS and TalkBack on Android complete this update.
Google Health 5.01 does not fundamentally transform the app, but it methodically corrects the most reported anomalies since the forced switch on May 19. Google has also announced a substantial list of new features to come in the coming months, including the creation of custom foods directly within the app, which suggests a regular update pace. For users who have not yet received version 5.01, the gradual rollout should be completed by next week.
