Google Health 5.01: Nutrition and Sport Bugs Finally Fixed

Google Health 5.01 is available on Android and iOS since June 5, 2026. This first post-redesign update corrects the main nutritional, fitness, and sleep tracking bugs that appeared since the forced migration from Fitbit.

A controversial migration that called for a quick fix

On May 19, 2026, Google replaced the Fitbit app with Google Health via an automatic, mandatory update, with no way to escape it. The transition quickly sparked strong frustration among long-time users, who were faced with a completely redesigned interface and missing features, such as Sleep Profile or motivational badges. On specialized forums, the comparison with the failed redesign of the Sonos app came up repeatedly. The technical malfunctions reported in the days following the launch further intensified this discontent.

Google responded by publishing a roadmap detailing the upcoming fixes and improvements. Version 5.01, the deployment of which began today according to Google’s official post on its community support, represents the first concrete delivery of this promise. The update is rolling out gradually over a week, with availability varying depending on devices and carriers.

What Google Health 5.01 corrects for nutritional tracking

Food management was among the most criticized points since the launch. Google is now addressing this by allowing users to view and record custom foods they had previously created. Creating new custom foods directly from the app is not yet available, but Google confirms it will arrive in a future update. Adding explanations and recommendations for setting macronutrient goals should facilitate the setup of nutritional tracking for users who want to go beyond simple calorie counting.

Data import from third-party apps also benefits from several fixes. A bug classified certain meals imported via Apple Health from MyFitnessPal, Cronometer, or Lose It under the generic category « Other » instead of their actual category, such as breakfast or lunch. This issue is resolved. The app now more intelligently handles duplicates generated when the same third-party service is connected both via Health Connect and directly to Google Health. Imported food entries from Apple Health without names now receive an automatic default name, improving the readability of the history.

Graph consistency is also improved. Nutrition and calorie data are now harmonized between the Today tab, the Health tab, and the detailed view dedicated to food. On iOS, Google has simplified the change of measurement units when recording a food item from search results.

Fitness: finally reliable workout recordings

On the sports tracking side, several bugs were affecting the reliability of recorded data. The most visible caused the wrong activity type to be assigned to certain running sessions, which appeared in the history under the label of another sport. Google specifies that this issue is corrected for new sessions as well as for existing history. Split data, which was missing from some race summaries, has also been restored.

Loading GPS maps, which could be slow or fail after an outdoor session, has been improved. On iOS, a specific bug caused double step counting for users who had both Apple Health tracking and Google Health mobile tracking enabled. This malfunction is corrected in version 5.01.

Sleep and general fixes

Sleep tracking was also affected. Some users no longer saw their sleep score appear in the app’s dedicated tab. Google confirms that this issue is resolved, without specifying what proportion of users were affected.

Several more general malfunctions are also addressed. The Today tab on Android sometimes displayed outdated information instead of updated data. On iOS, two blocking issues have been resolved: the migration of a Fitbit account to a Google account, which failed for some users, can now be completed by restarting the process from the beginning. The Friends & Family screen, which was sometimes very slow to load or completely inaccessible, is now working normally again. Accessibility improvements for VoiceOver users on iOS and TalkBack users on Android complete this update.

Google Health 5.01 does not fundamentally transform the app, but it methodically corrects the most reported anomalies since the forced switch on May 19. Google has also announced a substantial list of new features to come in the coming months, including the creation of custom foods directly in the app, which suggests a regular update pace. For users who have not yet received version 5.01, the gradual rollout should be completed by next week.
