Apple is poised to take a decisive step in the evolution of its smartphones. According to several converging sources, the iPhone 18 Pro could feature 5G satellite technology, thus offering full internet access without relying on traditional cellular networks. This innovation, which would go far beyond current satellite functionalities limited to emergencies, would position Apple at the forefront of a revolution in mobile connectivity.
Apple's C2 modem at the heart of the revolution
The key to this breakthrough lies in the in-house C2 modem that Apple is developing to replace Qualcomm chips. According to the Chinese leaker Fixed Focus Digital, whose predictions have proven accurate for the iPhone 17 and the A19 Pro processor for the iPhone Air, this component would integrate support for the standard NR-NTN (New Radio Non-Terrestrial Networks). This technology, defined by the 3GPP consortium, extends 5G capabilities to non-terrestrial networks, including low Earth orbit (LEO), medium Earth orbit (MEO), and geostationary orbit (GEO) satellites.
The C2 modem would represent a significant upgrade compared to the current C1 and C1X models. It could notably support 5G mmWave and achieve performance comparable to the Qualcomm chips it is intended to replace. Bloomberg and Mark Gurman had already mentioned in October 2025 Apple's ambitions regarding "5G networks that are not tied to the Earth's surface".
Technology that goes beyond emergency communications
Unlike the current satellite functionalities of iPhones, limited to SOS messages and emergency location, 5G NR-NTN would allow for full internet access via satellite. This evolution would mark a radical change in usage: web browsing, emails, instant messaging, and photo sharing would become possible even in the most remote areas, where no terrestrial network exists.
The NR-NTN standard offers two distinct approaches. The first uses the satellite temporary extension of the operator network when terrestrial coverage is lacking. The second, more ambitious, proposes a direct satellite data access, independently of terrestrial infrastructure. Apple could initially favor the first approach before evolving towards a more autonomous solution.
Considerable technical and infrastructural challenges
Despite the enthusiasm generated by these revelations, several obstacles must be overcome before this technology becomes truly usable on a daily basis. The necessary satellite infrastructure remains the main challenge: having a compatible modem is not enough, you also need an operational satellite network and agreements with service providers.
The first deployments should offer modest data rates compared to terrestrial 5G networks. The 3GPP Release 17 standard aims for speeds of several tens of Mbps in the sub-6 GHz band, with download targets of 5 Mbps and upload targets of 500 kbps for remote areas. For comparison, Huawei, a pioneer with its satellite messaging system on the Mate 50 series launched in 2022, still only offers SMS and emergency location services via the Beidou system.
The energy consumption constitutes another major challenge. To preserve battery life, the system would only switch to satellite when the terrestrial network is unavailable, then automatically revert to classic cellular coverage as soon as possible.
Strategic timing for Apple and its competitors
The year 2026 appears to be a a turning point for satellite connectivity on smartphones. Fixed Focus Digital notes that many manufacturers are preparing to integrate this technology, with Huawei having announced public tests in late 2025 with expected advancements for 2026. MediaTek, Airbus, and Eutelsat have also conducted demonstrations in 2025 using the OneWeb constellation.
On the operators' side, T-Mobile has already launched its service T-Satellite in partnership with Starlink, compatible with many existing smartphones, including iPhone 13 to 16 and several Samsung and Google Pixel models. This service currently offers messaging and, for some recent models like the Pixel 10, full access to Internet data.
If Apple confirms this feature for the iPhone 18 Pro expected in September 2026 alongside the first foldable iPhone, the brand will have to clarify its commercial model: dedicated plans according to usage, partnerships with operators like Starlink, or integration into existing plans. The coming months should bring concrete technical announcements, particularly during 3GPP meetings, as well as clues about orbital agreements and regulatory mentions in official filings.
